Photo Tips +
Tips for capturing your favorite hiking moments and scenery from American Hiking Society. Today's digital cameras are small, lightweight, and can store hundreds of photos. Keep your camera in an easy-to-access, waterproof pouch on your hip belt or sternum strap and you'll always be ready to capture that surprise that lies around the next bend in the trail.
  • Look for shots that feature bright colors such as lakes, a bright tent in a rainy forest, or a flower in a drab landscape.
  • Take photos at dawn or dusk for significantly better lighting.
  • Photograph the subject from an unusual viewpoint or angle, such as while lying down at its base or from its side instead of a front view.
  • Include all three parts of a landscape - foreground, middle ground, and background.
  • Use a tripod, fencepost, rock, or other stationary object to eliminate blurry photos.
  • Don't stop photographing in windy, wet, or overcast conditions - each may enhance the colors and feeling you're trying to capture.
